The FdA Graphic Design addresses contemporary approaches to branding, advertising and graphic design. Key design industry practitioners were consulted in the development of the course so that process and methodology reflect as closely as possible current working practices.

Opportunities to engage directly with industry occur throughout the 2 years, creating the possibility for a seamless progression into a successful career.

The course initially focuses on the development of design solutions that utilise a range of media platforms. Students explore strategies for the implementation of brand identity and look at the development of communication in relation to advertising and marketing. The impact of advanced technologies on working methods is explored as well as the emerging significance of teamwork and project management.

Conceptual and theoretical study, are underpinned by the development of practical skills in process and media. These issues are applied to an industry context through work-based learning, live projects, studio visits, work placement and a research project that involves interviewing key practitioners from the creative industries.

Staff

The staff team of the FdA courses at Camberwell is designed to enable students to get up to the minute industry experience while being guided through a very structured educational experience.

Core staff are appropriatly qualified educators who provide students with support and guidence, and create an environment where they can take advantage of weekly input from practitioners from the leading consultancies in their respective fields.

These have included the likes of Spin, Bibliotheque, Peepshow, 300 Million, Sennep, Moving Brands and onedotzero.

Year 1

Year 1 requires students to define and explore key principles in the creation of communication strategies for graphic design, branding and advertising.

You will establish appropriate research methodology and the skills necessary to produce design solutions that utilize a range of media platforms.

Students then develop a more specialised scheme of work through a diagnostic study and will work in a team to create an integrated branding strategy.

During the second half of the year students also take part in a research project that looks at how these ideas might apply to a professional context.

Year 2

Year 2 begins with a sustained period of work based learning enables students to reflect upon, analyse and evaluate a work placement or simulated live project.

This experience will inform the preparation of a personally devised programme of study, which will allow for the development of work that exploits specialist interests in order to create communications that relate to branding, advertising, graphic design and marketing.

The review and evaluation of this programme of study will allow for the production of a resolved body of work.

At the end of the year students are given detailed guidance in the preparation of an appropriate approach to employers.

Students holding a Foundation degree (FdA) may be considered for the 3rd year bridging unit, which enables students to apply to the 3rd Year BA (Hons) degree courses in Graphic Design.

Having completed a period of work-based learning students are in an excellent position to go straight into employment. Graduates from the last 4 years have been employed within design consultancies, publishing companies, advertising agencies and in-house marketing departments.

These have included Bibliothéque, Sky Creative, Creative Review, Johnston Works, Faber & Faber, the Design Studio, Designwerk, Quayola, Tangent, Sampson May, Transport Design, the Brand Consultancy, Dave, FiveFootSix, Goose UK, Kino, Sense Worldwide, Intelligent PR, Milltag, Front Magazine, John Brown & River Publishing, Virgin Media, and Adelphoi Music Ltd.
