This course is focussed on the practice of painting, but it also encourages working in other media, that emanates from an understanding of painting. The course welcomes exploration and supports you to follow your own specific lines of enquiry, research and the development of technical and theoretical skills. The course asks individuals to investigate the borders of their subject within the context of contemporary critical practice and technologies. The course fully integrates theory and practice, with key historical backgrounds and a range of technical processes specific to the discipline delivered. The course's student-centred ethos enables all students to develop to their maximum potential.

All staff on the course are nationally and internationally recognised artists, mainly painters, but also artists and critics whose work emanates from an understanding of painting.

The painting department hosts regular lectures by a wide variety of visiting artists. Recent guest speakers have included Sonia Boyce, Michael Stubbs, Miho Sato, Yinka Shonibare.

Individual student exchanges between other European Colleges are also encouraged, and recently painting students have spent periods of study in Madrid, Marseille, Milan and Bruxelles.

Year 1

The focus is on equipping you with both technical and conceptual vocabularies. You will be introduced to key thinkers and ideas as well as to historical and contemporary processes and media. You will make, think, write and speak about your practice and gain an understanding of different methodologies for researching and making. You will begin to set an agenda for your work and to reflect on and evaluate your progress.

A series of key ideas lectures will introduce you to several important debates and theories that underpin contemporary art and design. You will be introduced to a range of strategies to help you develop a research methodology and reflective approach to your studies.

Year 2

This year looks outward, at how work is received in different contexts, and how questions of authorship and reception affect what is made. You will also present and debate your work within the public arena.

Electives - This programme is undertaken by all 2nd year BA students and offers a menu of complementary studies that allows you to broaden your enquiry both in practical terms and in relation to critical and professional contexts. There is the opportunity to strengthen your practice, deepen a particular seam of critical enquiry and expand technical skills in specific media or processes. For example: sound, animation, philosophy, curating, performance.

Year 3

You will be planning, developing and realising your individual, self-initiated programme of study. You will be carrying out sustained practical and contextual research. Through a choice of dissertation, work placement or live project you will explore your practice in depth. You will develop your ideas using an appropriate research-based methodology and work towards a completed body of work, which will prepare you for ongoing study and professional practice.

Many graduates go on to further their studies in fine art on MA and MFA programmes at various institutions, such as The Royal Academy, Royal College, or overseas. Recent graduates are now exhibiting professionally, and include Turner Prize nominee GillianCarnegie, and high profile contemporary artist Matthew Ritchie. Other graduates have set up studios in London, Berlin and New York and exhibited in well-respected galleries and museums including the Saatchi Gallery and National Portrait Gallery.

. Applications are welcome from students who are returning to education after a break and have evidence of related experience/prior learning .
